The 17th Century premises that houses this wine bar was built
by a wealthy merchant. One reason for this is that only rich people were
allowed to have a stone carved arch in such a way as the one downstairs.
The other reason is that at the top of the house there is a turret where
one can see all the Valletta harbour. The current structure of Osteria Pergola Pinelli has evolved through the ages. The building is set on a three storey level, but this was not always the case. This house formed part of a much larger building or palace. One can observe this from the closed archway on the second floor. This means that the first floor was therefore much higher than it is today and that it formed part of a larger hall during earlier times. Just beneath Osteria Pergola Pinelli lays a bell shaped silo, which was later used as a well. It was built by the Knights of Malta circa 1590. This silo was used to store wheat imported from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Such silos were administered by the Old Universita, which is found just a corner away from wine bar. |
